But there is one caveat… :-(

Will the FR-S I drive at the event be an Automatic or Manual?

The FR-S on tour will be 6-speed automatic transmission versions.  We realize that FR-S enthusiasts may naturally prefer to drive the manual version – however, due to logistics, product availability, and insurance concerns, we can only offer the automatic version in our Ride and Drive format.  We are confident the paddle-shift equipped automatics will still allow you to experience the precise performance and engineering of the Scion FR-S. Should you wish to experience a 6-spd manual after your FR-S First Ride experience, we encourage you to contact your local Scion dealership.

Drive & event observations (& my opinions) will be posted here at Racing Ready…  Stay tuned!

CoTA Progress Witnessed, w/Exclusive Trackside Comparison Images

Saturday, I was able to visit Wild Bubba’s Wild Game Grill, along with Michael Cox, Business Manager of KHP Consulting.  KHP handles an integral role of getting together & coordinating the logistics for Formula 1 events.  In this case, they are acting as a coordinating liaison between the Formula 1 machine & Circuit of The Americas (CoTA).

KHP Consulting logo

KHP will work with Circuit of The Americas’ marketing, public relations and guest services departments, to develop innovative programs and accommodation, promoting positive experiences for teams, drivers and fans.

“Opening a new Grand Prix venue and preparing for the tens of thousands of race fans and national and international media representatives that will attend a F1 event takes careful planning and execution,” said Julie Loignon, vice president of public and community relations for Circuit of The Americas.  “KHP has significant expertise upon which our management team can draw, and the consulting firm’s years of experience serving the F1 community will be invaluable to us as we move quickly towards our grand opening this fall.”

I met Michael last August, when he made an anticipatory visit to South/Central Texas. You can read here about what he experienced.  Today I introduced him to Wild Bubba (aka Wyman Gilliam).  We were able to share F1 event “how to” questions & possible expected logistical present & future plans.  We also enjoyed antelope burgers – VERY good!

We also were able to see new developments of CoTA & the environs.  Quite a bit has changed since I took pictures in June of 2011.  Here’s 2 “then & now” pix for you to enjoy.  These will allow you to appreciate the great progress CoTA has achieved & some of the views (& viewing areas from the nearby General Admission areas).

With about 4 months to go till the Austin F1 USGP debuts on November 18th, there is still a lot to complete.  Most of the track circuit has had the 1st (of three) layers of asphalt paved.  Although we were not able to actually be onsite at CoTA, the activities documented on the Web, along with conversations with those in the know, all of this will come to fruition in a timely manner.

Racing Ready grows more excited in anticipation of this new, world-class, motorsports event to come.  Austin & CoTA will pull this all off well & will continue to improve in subsequent years.

V8 Supercars’ Winterbottom Gives Thumbs Up To CoTA” src=”” alt=”Mark ‘Frosty’ Winterbottom, giving Circuit of The Americas his Thumbs Up! – Courtesy of” width=”270″ height=”167″ />

Today Circuit of The Americas (C0TA) welcomed a racing star from the Australian-based series, V8 Supercars. His name is Mark “Frosty” Winterbottom.  He came to learn about Austin, went around the CoTA circuit at speed in a Mustang GT (from turns 5 thru 12) & shared his impressions of Austin & CoTA for journalists.  The popular Aussie driver gave a ringing endorsement to the almost completed facility.

Above you can see Mark (& the Mustang GT – sweet!) at the apex of Turn 11 at CoTA.  Here’s a quote from Mark that says it all:

The circuit’s topography, including the dramatic changes in elevation, will make for some really fun racing and a great show for fans,” Winterbottom said. “While I didn’t get to drive the full circuit, the sequence of turns I did sample were fantastic, and I can’t wait to come back and take a lap around the finished racecourse. Circuit of The Americas will be a welcome addition to our future V8 Supercar line-up!

Here’s a quick, but in-depth interview with Mark from Speed City by Jon Massengale – ENJOY!

For those of you fans of Wild Bubba’s Wild Game Grill, here’s a shot of Mark enjoying a burger (found later it was Antelope).  This was from before he ventured onto the track at CoTA.  You can tell he has great taste eating at Wild Bubba’s!

The nickname, “Frosty” comes from the Disney – PIXAR movie character in Cars 2.  Mark lent his voice to be that of Frosty.

But here’s a shot at speed of Mark, at speed, in the actual Ford Falcon racer he campaigns in the V8 Supercars series.  You can see that this is an action-filled racing series!

And what of this rumor that V8 Supercars would like to tie the Austin/CoTA race visit in the Spring of 2013 with another back-to-back race in Mexico City?  There are some talks going on to have an racing event at the famed Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez circuit.  That would be very interesting & great for ALL the fans!

Racing Ready had been invited to attend this media introduction & I was all set to go!  Unfortunately, issues at work prevented me from attending.  I had a slew of good questions to ask & not just concerning V8 Supercars.  I will push on regardless to get onsite at Circuit of The Americas & get the questions both you & I know we want answered. ALMS racing at Mazda Raceway - Laguna Seca

Having the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) racing at Circuit of The Americas, had been a forgone conclusion since all of this began with CoTA.  So this announcement finally seals it!  I thought this would have been announced sooner.  This was when Patron Tequila key investor John Paul DeJoria (internationally known co-founder of John Paul Mitchell Systems) announced his investment participation with CoTA, back on May 10, 2012.

Racing Ready is now waiting for something official to happen, officially, with Moto GP‘s commitment to CoTA participation.  But, I think, we will have to wait for Tavo Hellmund to come to terms with both Bobby Epstein & Red McCombs.  I’m sorry to say, I’m not holding my breath on that happening soon.  🙁

Hot Red SAAB – Major Turbocharging Delivery

My day job is on an Army base.  Army personnel have a reputation of enjoying fun, sporty cars, being the young gentleman (mostly) that they are.  Part of their duty involves moving to different parts of the country/world. This makes taking along a vehicle a hassle sometimes.  Our base has a small parking lot called the “Lemon Lot”.  Sometimes I visit to see the variety of interesting cars, trucks & motorcycles displayed for sale there. They occasionally have RVs, boats & other unique/oddball modes of transport, as well.

Karlino reviewing the Lemon Lot sports car assortment...

Driving by, one day, I quickly glanced & saw a red, modified sports sedan.  From a distance I thought maybe it was a some sort of a souped up Mitsubishi or Subaru sedan. Upon closer inspection I was pleasantly surprised to see a highly modified SAAB!

Such modification in the pursuit of a fast SAAB 9-3

Plenty of breathing & cooling mods on this SAAB 9-3

I don’t know about you, but, I think I’d move out of the way if I saw this Red Hot SAAB 9-3 bearing down on me…

You'd think twice if you saw this SAAB 9-3 in your mirror!

SAABs, for the most part, are already turbocharged.  This one had a massive air-to-air intercooler, larger & more aggressive wheels & tires, tightened up suspension, & a cat back performance muffler.

Performance cat back plumbing on this SAAB 9-3

By the look of the auxiliary gauges on the dash, I’m sure the the turbo was much larger than stock, as well as other go-fast goodies under the hood.

This SAAB 9-3 cockpit means business!

Flyin' SAAB 9-3 with rear wing...

I have no idea what the mileage & drivetrain condition of this SAAB was.  So, who knows what whether a $8750 is a decent asking price.  All I can say is, caveat emptor – let the buyer beware.  You can see the seller’s list of mods:

Racing Ready is always on the lookout to showcase unique performance vehicles.

P. S. – Don’t bother to inquire about his car, it’s no longer on the lot – I’m guessing the owner had already sold it…
