There’s a good reason why autocrossers and track enthusiasts switch to racing harnesses, as stock inertia-reel seat belts allow too much driver movement during hard cornering and braking. With a loosely anchored driver, control inputs can become jerky and erratic, leading to slower lap times. Mather Automotive Innovations, Inc. has come up with an intriguing new product designed to cure this situation: the CG-Lock. It simply locks the lap belt portion of a car’s stock inertia-reel three-point belt in place, helping to keep the driver properly seated. By locking only the lap belt in place, the CG-Lock still allows full movement of the driver’s upper body, which can sometimes make performance driving easier. Twisty autocross courses that require lots of arm movements will often favor a driver who can use their shoulders while keeping their lower torso and legs securely planted.
We tried the CG-Lock at a local autocross and came away very impressed. After a simple 30-second installation we had the advantages of a racing-style harness without the complication of having one installed. Our course times were more consistent and our legs (and feet) were better able to clutch, brake, and accelerate rather than brace our body against the g-forces.
